Just because we’re here in the US, doesn’t mean we’re not affected.

We recently bought bigas. Hubby and I had to do a double take because it cost us $22 for a 25 pound bag, whereas about 2-3 weeks ago, we got the same kind of bigas for $14. What the heck happened?

No day like today to go on that low-carb diet, no?

~~~
Do the math and you’ll see that each kilo of bigas here is about Php78, as compared to Php40/kilo in Pinas. Now who’s got the best deal?
~~~

Pero duda namin ni hubby, yung may ari ng tindahan, marami siyang stock ng bigas na nabili niya at the old price, and he’s just taking advantage of the “rice shortage” para kumita ng extra.

Batukan ko kaya?

~~~
Nah, benefit of the doubt. :)
~~~

While at the Filipino store, the manongs in line behind us were also talking about the exorbitant prices of commodities in the Philippines. They came to the conclusion that it was cheaper, still, to live in pinas than here.

Pero I doubt kung totoong uuwi sila, haha. Charing!

~~~
Speaking of Charing, I kinda mentioned in my previous post that Charice Pempengco will be appearing on Oprah on May 8th. Sorry, mali pala. Charice is going to appear on Monday (the 12th).
Kaya pala, I was glued to the TV last Thursday and I was really wondering when Charice will suddenly materialize behind Cher. Do you believe in life after love?
~~~

Hindi pinatulan ni Howie ang balut sa Deal or No Deal (Pinas edition), ano? Napanood niyo? Cute.

Pero hindi rin niya pinatulan yung pagkembot ni Kris pag nagtatanong kung Deal or No Deal. Feeling ko mas pipiliin ni Howie yung balut over the kembot. :P

Di kaya naka-relate si Howie sa penoy?

~~~
And I also mentioned in my previous post that Louross was kicked out of the show the other week (I edited that one already). Mali din pala. I kinda forgot that no one was elimated pala last week because one of the chefs quit, hehe. Sorry.
At least I admit my mistakes. I guess, it’s the effect of the low-carb diet. :D
~~~

We sent our passports last week via courier to the Philippine Embassy in Washington DC. Aside from the passport fee of $50 each for me and for hubby, they also told us to include $8 in the money order for return shipping expenses. Hubby even clarified if he was supposed to send 8$ or $16 for both of our passports and the lady at the Embassy said, $8 lang, iho, sama-sama na yun.

This afternoon, the Embassy called and said we should’ve sent $16 for both passports! Hello.

And then, as a remedy, they told hubby to fax them an authorization letter so that they could charge hubby’s credit card for $8. Ok fine. I didn’t know that that was SOP sa Embassy. Anyway…

I’m just telling you guys that, we are only authorizing the Embassy to charge $8 off our credit card. Ayan, para malinaw. Kayo ang saksi.

If someone suddenly decided on a shopping spree at Louis Vuitton at my hubby’s credit card’s expense, at least you guys know that it wasn’t me!

~~~
It was my sister’s birthday last May 1 and my brother’s birthday on the 7th. Belated happy birthday sa inyong dalawa! Love you, guys! *muah*
Goofing around with my brother and sister at Dads. Tapos na kasi mag-buffet kaya baliw na. Di ako masyadong umabot sa picture, hehe.
    - tulad nga ng sabi ko, love ko si howie. hahaha!
    - ang bigas dito the last time na nagpunta kami sa asian store, 19.99. tapos me limit na 5 sacks per customer. hello, wala naman kaming balak magimbak. pero, hindi kaya tinatago lang ng mga olympians ng china ang bigas? harharhar.
    - belated happy birthday sa mga kapatid mo!
    - happy mother’s day na rin! mmwah!
    - have a great weekend!
    ang haba, pasensya na. :)
    Weng’s last blog post..Richly-Blessed April Weekend 2
    hi weng, thanks sa mahabang comment, i loved it! :D kulang ang research ko, purol na yata utak ko kakahataw dun sa kabila, haha! :D hayaan mo, next time i will verify and double check my sources para naman bumalik ang pagka-reliable ko tungkol sa chismisan. :D teka, mas mura ng one cent ang bigas niyo kesa kina abby! daya, haha!
    uy, seryoso, i think yung cyclone sa myanmar malaki din ang effect sa rice shortage. :( di ba burma ang pinaka-malaking rice exporter sa asia or something like that? :( ~m
  2. abby on May 9th, 2008 8:37 pm
    kaya pala napakamot ako ng ulo nung nabasa ko na naalis na si louross sa entry mo. kasi alam ko umiyak sya nun pero walang natanggal. okay im rubbing it in, sorry! :P
    kainis yang bigas crisis na yan talaga. kami from $12 naging $20. OA diba!
    si kris, parang display lang sa deal or no deal. walang nagawa yung pagiging ma-papel nya, o ha! :D
    abby’s last blog post..Ten Plagues
    hi abby, hindi ko nga alam kung bakit nasabi kong na-kick out na siya. sabi sa iyo, kulang sa carbs ang utak ko. uy bakit mas mura ang bigas sa inyo? baka NFA yan ha? :D and si kris, nakuuu naasar talaga ako pag naririnig ko siyang nagsasalita, nagpapaka-slang e di naman siya ubra kay howie. :D ~m
  3. annamanila on May 9th, 2008 8:55 pm
    The “collage” of entries gave me a nice update about my favorite partygirl.
    The rice shortage must really be a global phenomenon because when we called for bids for rice imports, the bidding failed for lack of takers.
    I hope the next picture of the partygirl would be uncut, unabridged, unexpurgated. hahaha
    annamanila’s last blog post..The Doctora-Not-Quite
    hi annamanila! my sister was taking the picture, e since both of them were a head taller than me they kinda took for granted na i would be included in the frame. obviously, i didn’t. :P next time, i’ll hold the camera para i’ll be the one who’s uncut, unabridged, and unexpurgated, hehe. ~m
  5. Iris on May 9th, 2008 11:06 pm
    hay nako sinabi mo pa. ang mahal na ng bigas! buti nalang we still have some left from the one i got as a benefit from my previous employer. and did you know canned goods’ prices went up na rin? mia’s milk is now over P1k. dati around 900p lang. hay buhay talaga.
    ano, uwi na? hehe.
    hi ris, i heard nga from the manongs na tumaas lahat sa pinas! kawawa naman ang mga tao who’re below the poverty line. paano na sila makaka-survive? :( and yung gatas P1k na? grabe dati si ninna around P700 lang yan. balik breastfeeding ka na lang kaya? hehe! uwi ako, mas mura pa rin pedicure diyan! :D ~m
  6. Pinky on May 10th, 2008 6:39 am
    Loved the way you “threaded” your stories, Mee ;)
    Kahit kami dito sa disyerto, yung dating SR14 (USD3.70) na 5 kg jasmine rice e biglang naging SR22 (USD5.87) two weeks later! Kung walang totoong rice shortage, looks like a some people are definitely getting rich at our expense - waahhh! :(
    What’s more, pati yung monthly grocery expenses namin went up by 30%! Grabe na ito, kapatid!
    Hay naku, medyo ipikit muna natin ang ating mga mata sa mga sad stories na ito…after all, it’s our day tomorrow, right? Happy Mom’s Day, Meeya! Mwah! :D
    Pinky’s last blog post..LP #6: Mahal na Ina
    hi pinky, huwag naman sana that people are taking advantage of this. hindi naman makatao yun. :( and yes, kami rin our grocery budget has shot up these past weeks. kailangan nang rumaket, sis! :D ~m
  7. Leap of Faith! on May 10th, 2008 7:38 am
    Naku, Meeya, it looks like Pinky was able to share with you our recent experience on the rice shortage. Grabe, everytime I fetch the children from school I always here the BBC news saying that so many people are suffering globally from the rising food prices. Nakakaawa. I’m sure so many of our people are also affected by this.
    Buti na lang at the shows you mentioned are not being aired here on time so hindi ako masyadong affected.
    Hey, buti at naayos niyo na rin yung passports niyo. FYI, I heard that there are many people in Manila who are having problems obtaining a visa with the US Embassy since the new MRP have sub-standard features daw. Wala lang, I just wanted to let you know.
    Happy Mother’s day!
    Leap of Faith!’s last blog post..Six Quirky Things About Me
    hi keith, thanks for the greeting! :) about the passports, really? or baka excuse lang ng US embassy yan to turn down more people. hindi naman kasalanan ng applicants yan. :( we still got the old green ones so low-tech pa rin kami, haha! hopefully, when the newer batch of passports come out, mas ok na ang quality. ~m
  8. kengkay on May 10th, 2008 9:55 am
    uh-uh, mali yang postage nyo, kahit na two passports yan, dapat cost for one postage lang yan. dito sa alemanya, parating dalawa ang ina-apply kong possports, kasi the kids have pinoy passports din.. pero postage for one lang ang bayad. hmmmm.. baka pambili ng bigas, hehehe. dito rin, actually two years ago pa tumataas ang sako ng bigas. it went from 11 euro per sack na naging 25 euro, magkano kaya ngayon? hmm. baka mag patatas at tinapay na lang ako, hahaha
    nga pala, happy mother’s day!
    kengkay’s last blog post..mother’s day problem
    hi kengkay, alam mo ba na-send nila yung passports namin nang hindi pa namin napapadala sa kanila yung $8 na kulang, hahaha! anyway, ni-mail pa rin ni hubby yung pera at baka nga pambili ng bigas yun, regalo na lang namin sa kanila. :D bhmd din sa iyo sis! ~m
    happy mother’s day, meeya. dito, di ko feel ang rice shortage. kasi ba naman, ako lang a rice-eater dito. hindi pa regular. once or twice a month lang. nabubuhay kami sa tinapay at patatas.
    hi gem, hehe buti pa kayo. kami kasi nahihilo pag hindi nagra-rice, haha! pero ngayon baka mabawasan na ang pagkain ng kanin, nagtitipid na, haha! ~m
  16. monaco on May 11th, 2008 12:03 pm
    Yan din ang suspetsa ko dito, nag-hoard lnag ng bigas ang mga suppliers pala lalong tumaas ang presyo. Dami nga nahuhuli na Chinese hoarders eh, tapos ang siste pa, they’re remilling cheap NFA rice to make it look more expensive and selling it at a higher cost! tamaan sana ng kidalat mga yan, sa pwet!
    hi monaco, naku grabe talaga!! mga walang kaluluwa. mabibilaukan yang mga yan bago tamaan ng kidlat sa pwet! ~m
    mura ng charge sa inyo for passport renewal ah? it’s around $120 daw dito eh. heniweys, super bhmd! na-antig ako dun sa card na ginawa ni ninna. stuff like that removes any trace of regret in packing your bags and leaving your comfort zone.
